Glenstone Museum is a serene contemporary art haven located in Potomac, Maryland. Unlike many other museums, Glenstone encourages visitors to get lost and wander through the meadow, stumbling upon sculptures by artists such as Richard Serra and Jeff Koons. Designed by Thomas Phifer and Partners, the museum comprises cubical, monolithic pavilions formed with poured concrete blocks and glass curtain walls, creating an airy layout.
Much like the outdoor experience, the indoor environment allows visitors to immerse themselves in a unique viewing experience. To honor the museum’s intent, the wayfinding and signage design strategy was centered around a subdued and minimal approach. Directional signs are subtly recessed directly into substrates, and any extruding signage elements were meticulously designed to match the materiality of the museum.
